Q & A with Anna Karolina Schmiedlova: “A very though battle. I don’t even know how I won!”

A Bucharest champion back in 2015, Anna Karolina Schmiedlova won a roller coaster battle against Ana Bogdan, in the first round of the 2018 edition of BRD Bucharest Open: 3 hours and 20 minutes, a match finished just before midnight. Here’s what she had to say about this.

Longest match of the day here, one of the longest in the history or the tournament. How do you feel now?

Anna Karolina Schmiedlova: Definitely it was one of the toughest matches of my life, she played really well. It was a really tough game and anyone could see that in the end we were just fighting more than playing. I think it was a good match and I tried to focus because it was not easy to play at this hour. I am happy that I could play and many people came to watch, it was a really good atmosphere. I am happy to be here because I won this tournament once, so I have really good memories.

Last time you played Ana it was this year in Bogota, where you won easily, what changed today?

I think she played better today than before. In Bogota it was in the semifinals and different conditions and here she is at home and she had many people supporting her and it’s also different playing the first round of the tournament. But I am really happy that I won and that I fought as much as I fought today.

Bucharest Open is one of the tournaments that you won and you are now going up in the ranking again. Do you think you can go back to where you were a few years ago?

It’s tough to say because I almost lost and I don’t even know how I won (smiling). Bucharest was really important for me because this is an important part of the season, I really like clay and this is the last tournament and after a long time I got into the main draw of a WTA tournament, so I am happy that I can even play such tournaments.
